Cake Monster
Same as the first, just without the personalized message.
I enjoy drawing things for my friends, especially as gifts for birthdays and Christmas; so for my friend Angela, who turned 25 on this day, I drew a rather unconventional take on the traditional birthday cake.
It was intended to be cute, but in a scary kind of way, except that it doesn’t seem to have turned out like that at all…
This cake is based on one featured in a drawing I drew for her a few years ago, in which the cake was being presented by a chibi version of myself wearing a festive little party hat. I thought that making this monster cake based on that one would add some personal meaning to it. Don’t know if it did.
The cake itself is a three-layer white cake separated by vanilla icing and a strawberry jelly; the outside is iced with pink icing and decorated with blue icing ribbons connecting the red marzipan roses placed across it. If you look, you can see that the center rose has been relocated to the inside of the monster’s mouth since its transformation. The top of the cake is crowned with a braid of white icing, surrounding evenly-spaced pastel-colored candles and one LARGE purple candle at the center.
The original idea was to have 25 candles (24 and then the center one), but trying to figure out the math for the spacing left me confused and disoriented. I hate math.
The little monster was supposed to look like something that would have you so entranced by its cuteness that you would completely ignore all the sharp and decayed teeth and the strawberry jelly dripping out of its eyes and just want to cuddle it to death. I don’t know, maybe it still does.
Once I saw how grotesque and menacing it was, I just said, “To hell with it!” and decided that if I couldn’t make it cute, I’d try to make it look a bit more evil. That’s when I got the idea to add the skeletal face in the flame of the center candle.
The cake’s teeth are yellowed and decayed; there’s even a cavity on that bottom tooth! I figured that if a cake became all possessed and went all Hellraiser, it would probably have decayed teeth like someone might get from eating too many sweets.
Now, a slice has been taken out of the cake’s left side, near the back. It could then be assumed that the delicious pastry did not become hostile until someone took a slice out of it. I mean, no one likes to be eaten!
The knife clutched in its right hand is the same one that had been used to cut the slice from this poor creature, and the fork (yes, I made it a little big :P) is a dessert fork. Kind of ironic, I suppose, that these would be its weapons…
The message that I attached with this picture when I gave it to my friend stated: “I made you a cake! But it kinda went…BAD…” I thought it was cute, but I’ve been told that I’m sick and weird. :/
